What Is Daan Utsav?
Daan Utsav (earlier called the Joy of Giving Week) is India’s “festival of giving” Launched in 2009.This festival is celebrated every year, in the week including Gandhi Jayanti, i.e., October 2-8, and brings together Indians from all walks of life, to celebrate “giving”.
From auto drivers to CEOs, school children to celebrities, homemakers to opinion leaders, millions of people give their time, money, resources or skills back to society- by creating or participating in “events” of their choice. A giving event could be as simple as a family taking out the maid’s children for an ice-cream party, or as large as Gift Compassion that had 60,000+ school children across India making and exchanging gifts with their peers from different socio-economic backgrounds.
Events are organised by individuals, social groups, schools, colleges, NGOs, corporates, media houses and others. 5 million+ people participated in 3000+ events across 200+ cities in DaanUtsav 2016, raising several tens of crores in money and resources donated, and millions of volunteer hours.
What is KHUSHII ?
KHUSHII (Kinship for Humanitarian, Social and Holistic Intervention in India) headed by the legendary cricketer Kapil Dev is a national organization working for the upliftment of the not so privileged communities in rural and urban India; helping them discover ways to live with dignity, socio-economic independence, self-sustainability and better health.
400 million of India’s citizens are below the age of eighteen, making it the world’s largest child population. A staggering proportion of these children go through their childhood with their basic needs unmet. 63% of Indian children go to bed hungry, 53% suffer from chronic malnutrition, 20 million Indian children live on the streets; 60 million are deprived of education, and 85 million have never been immunized. (Source: UNICEF & NSOE).
Established 14 years ago, KHUSHII has been taking small steps to ameliorate these conditions.
Over the years, KHUSHII has spearheaded several projects that have touched and transformed the lives of thousands of people through community development, spreading of gender equality, health and hygiene programs, and educational initiatives.
Today, all its resources are focused on its remedial education project Shikshaantra+. The project provides educational support, medical attention, counselling, value-based education and all-round development to 18000 children across various government schools in India. KHUSHII has pledged to work towards improving the quality of school education and learning outcomes of children from low-income within the premises of the government schools and extend to these children a better school experience – by lending them every support they might need to carry on with their education and perform to their potentials.
